Rambutan is a spectacular tropical fruit tree native to Southeast Asia, producing clusters of hairy red (or yellow) fruit with sweet, translucent white flesh surrounding a central seed. It is closely related to longan and lychee and shares similar growing requirements. In Australia, rambutan is grown in far north Queensland (Cairns, Mission Beach, and surrounds) and in the NT. It requires a true tropical climate: warm year-round temperatures, high humidity, and protection from any frost whatsoever. Trees prefer deep, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and consistent moisture throughout the growing season. Rambutan benefits from a short, distinct dry season to initiate flowering, similar to lychee. Plants are available as marcotted (air-layered) trees, which maintain true-to-type performance, or as seedlings, which vary in fruit quality and may take longer to fruit. Marcotted trees typically fruit within 2-3 years. In tropical conditions, rambutan produces one to two crops per year. Trees are large (up to 15 metres in their natural form) and benefit from regular pruning after harvest to manage size and encourage fruiting wood. In WA, rambutan is not commercially grown due to climate limitations, though the Kimberley's tropical far north offers marginal potential. No specific quarantine restrictions apply to rambutan in WA.
