Jackfruit is the world's largest tree fruit, producing spectacular pods that can weigh 10-40 kg on a single tree. It is a fast-growing tropical tree from South and Southeast Asia that has adapted well to coastal Queensland and northern Australia. Tracked varieties include Galaxy (sweet, firm arils suited to fresh eating) and Crunchy (as the name suggests, a firmer-textured selection favoured by those who prefer less cloying sweetness). Jackfruit grows best in frost-free tropical and subtropical climates with ample rainfall or supplemental irrigation. Trees are wind-sensitive when young and benefit from a sheltered position. Plant in deep, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.5. Jackfruit does not tolerate waterlogging and will suffer root disease in poorly drained sites. Fertilise heavily with a balanced fertiliser through the wet season. Trees begin fruiting from 3-5 years from seed, though grafted specimens fruit earlier. Fruit requires 3-8 months to mature depending on climate. In WA, jackfruit is grown in the Kimberley and can be attempted in warm, frost-free coastal gardens. No specific state quarantine restrictions apply, but standard biosecurity checks on plant imports from other states should be confirmed with the WA Department of Primary Industries.
