Growing Pecan in Australia
Pecans are large, long-lived deciduous trees native to North America, producing rich, buttery nuts prized for fresh eating and baking. Australia has a small but growing commercial pecan industry, with significant production in Queensland, NSW, and the Riverina. Home growers across Australia are increasingly planting pecan trees, particularly in the warmer inland regions and WA's south-west.
When buying pecan trees in Australia, variety selection matters more than for most fruit trees. Type A varieties (such as Cape Fear, Desirable, and Pawnee) release pollen before their own flowers are receptive; type B varieties (such as Stuart and Mahan) do the reverse. Planting one of each ensures cross-pollination and significantly increases yield. Single-variety plantings often produce disappointing crops. Cape Fear is widely available in Australia and is considered reliable and high quality. Desirable is a productive type A that performs well in most Australian climates. Cherokee is a high-yield type A suited to warm conditions.
Pecan trees for sale in Australia are typically grafted onto seedling rootstock and sold as container-grown specimens. Grafted trees begin producing meaningful crops from 5-8 years, compared to 10+ years for seedlings. Most Australian nurseries sell 1-3 year old grafted trees in 3-10 litre pots. In WA, pecan trees grow well in the south-west agricultural region (Manjimup, Harvey, and surrounds). Perth growers in coastal suburbs may struggle with insufficient summer heat; inland and hills locations are more suitable. No quarantine restrictions apply to pecan trees entering WA from eastern states.
Pecan trees require a long, hot growing season of 180+ frost-free days and moderate winter chill (200-600 hours below 7°C). They are best suited to the Queensland and NSW inland regions, the Riverina, WA's south-west, and parts of South Australia. Full-sized trees are very large at maturity (10-15 metres tall and wide); allow adequate space or choose a sheltered spot. Plant in deep, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0-7.0). Pecans are sensitive to zinc deficiency in alkaline soils; supplement with zinc chelates if interveinal yellowing appears on new leaves. Consistent moisture during nut fill (summer) is critical for yield and nut quality.
Pecan scab is the most damaging disease in humid eastern regions, causing premature nut drop. In drier climates like inland NSW, QLD, and WA, disease pressure is lower. Pecan trees are generally long-lived (50-100+ years) and improve in yield with age. Expect your first small crop around years 5-7, a modest but rewarding crop by year 10, and full production from year 15 onwards. Patience is required, but a mature pecan tree is one of the most productive nut trees you can grow in Australia.
