Growing Pecan in Western Australia

Pecans are large, long-lived deciduous trees native to North America, producing rich, buttery nuts popular for fresh eating and baking. They are commercially grown in Queensland, NSW, and increasingly in South Australia and WA. Tracked varieties include Cape Fear (reliable, high quality, mid-season), Cherokee (high yield, protandrous type A), and Desirable (a self-fertile type A variety, productive and consistent). Understanding protandry and protogyny is important: type A varieties release pollen before their flowers are receptive; type B varieties are the reverse. Planting one of each ensures good cross-pollination and maximum yield. Pecan trees require a long, hot growing season (180+ frost-free days) and moderate winter chill. They are best suited to the Queensland and NSW inland regions, the Riverina, and WA's lower south-west. Full-sized trees are large (10+ metres) at maturity; plan space accordingly. Plant in deep, well-drained soil with a neutral pH. Pecans are sensitive to zinc deficiency in alkaline soils; supplement with zinc chelates if leaf yellowing occurs. Trees begin producing meaningful crops from 5-8 years of age. In WA, pecans grow well in the south-west agricultural region. No significant quarantine restrictions apply. Pecan scab is the most damaging fungal disease, primarily an issue in humid eastern regions.
