Mulberry trees are among the most productive and low-maintenance fruit trees available to Australian gardeners, tolerating a wide range of climates from subtropical Queensland to cool-climate Victoria. Tracked varieties include Black (dwarf form, ideal for small gardens and containers, producing sweet dark berries), Majestic (a vigorous large tree with heavy crops of large, sweet black berries), and Red Shahtoot (a white mulberry with elongated red-white fruit, excellent fresh eating flavour). Mulberries thrive in full sun in well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. They are extremely drought-tolerant once established but produce larger, juicier fruit with consistent irrigation. Trees drop fruit heavily as it ripens, so plant away from paths, vehicles, and light-coloured paving. Fruit typically ripens from November to February depending on region and variety. Mulberries are very cold-hardy in the dormant state; most varieties handle frosts to minus 10°C. In subtropical climates they are semi-evergreen and may produce smaller crops in winter. The main challenges are birds (netting is the only reliable solution for clean fruit) and the staining juice. In WA, mulberry is widely grown and has no quarantine restrictions. Dwarf forms are popular in Perth for courtyard gardens.
