Lilly pilly is a genus of native Australian rainforest trees (Syzygium and Acmena) that produce small, edible, tart berries and serve double duty as ornamental screening plants. They are extremely well-adapted to Australian conditions and require minimal care once established. Tracked varieties include Aussie Compact (dense, tidy growth habit, reliable fruiting), Cherry Puff (pendulous clusters of cherry-sized magenta berries), and Broad-leaved (a larger-leafed species with substantial purple fruit). Lilly pilly grows across a wide range of climates, from tropical Queensland to temperate Victoria and WA's south coast. It tolerates both moderate frost and tropical heat, though specific varieties have different limits. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Lilly pilly responds well to fertilising and pruning and can be maintained as a hedge or allowed to develop as a small tree. Berries ripen in autumn and winter and are suitable for jams, sauces, and desserts. Raw berries are tart with a spicy, clove-like aftertaste. Psyllid insects (lerps) cause the characteristic bubble-like deformations on new growth. Control with white oil sprays or by selecting resistant varieties. Lilly pilly has no quarantine restrictions across Australian states and is widely available.
