Growing Wax Jambu in Australia
Wax jambu, also known as wax apple or rose apple (Syzygium samarangense), is a tropical tree from Southeast Asia producing crisp, juicy, bell-shaped fruit with a delicate sweet flavour reminiscent of watermelon rind. It is grown mainly as a novelty and specialty fruit crop in tropical Australia. Tracked varieties include Pink (pale pink to white fruit, mild and crisp, very attractive) and Red (deeper red fruit, slightly sweeter, more visually striking). Wax jambu requires a tropical to subtropical climate and grows best in coastal far north Queensland and the NT. It will not tolerate frost. Trees prefer rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. They are moderate feeders; apply a balanced tropical fruit fertiliser every 2-3 months during the growing season. Wax jambu trees are fast-growing and can begin fruiting within 2-3 years of planting. They produce several crops per year in tropical conditions. Fruit is highly perishable and best eaten fresh; it does not store or transport well. The hollow, crisp texture and delicate flavour are best appreciated straight from the tree. In WA, wax jambu can be grown in the Kimberley and in exceptionally sheltered tropical or warm subtropical microclimates. No specific quarantine restrictions apply in WA.
