Growing Tamarillo in Australia
Tamarillo, or tree tomato, is a fast-growing subtropical shrub from South America producing egg-shaped, tomato-like fruit with firm flesh and a distinctive tart, slightly bitter skin. Tracked varieties include Red (the most common form, with deep red skin and red-orange flesh, strongly flavoured and tart) and Orange (a milder type with orange skin and sweeter, less acidic flesh). Tamarillo is best suited to subtropical and mild temperate climates: coastal Queensland, northern NSW, and the warmer parts of WA and SA. It grows quickly from seed or cutting, often fruiting within 18 months. The plant is short-lived, typically productive for 5-7 years before declining. Plant in full sun in well-drained, fertile soil. Tamarillo has a shallow root system and is highly sensitive to frost, drought, and waterlogging; it does best with consistent moisture and protection from cold winds. Fertilise regularly with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season. Fruit ripens from autumn to winter. To eat, cut in half and scoop out the flesh, discarding the bitter skin unless cooking. Tamarillo is excellent in jams, chutneys, and sauces. In WA, tamarillo grows well in Perth and surrounding areas in warm, sheltered positions. No quarantine restrictions apply. Whitefly and spider mite can be persistent pests in dry conditions.
