Growing Starfruit in Western Australia

Starfruit, also known as carambola, is a tropical to subtropical tree producing distinctive five-ribbed fruit that creates a perfect star shape when sliced. It is popular for fresh eating, juicing, and garnishing and has a refreshing, mildly tart to sweet flavour depending on variety. Tracked varieties include Daleys Sweet Gold (a sweet, low-acid selection well-suited to fresh eating), Kembangan (a Malaysian variety with excellent sweetness and firm texture), and Thai Knight (a productive variety popular in commercial Queensland production). Starfruit grows best in coastal Queensland and tropical NT, with good results also in northern NSW and frost-free coastal WA. Trees prefer full sun in well-drained, slightly acidic soil with consistent moisture. They are sensitive to drought and salt spray and do not tolerate frost. Fertilise with a balanced citrus-style fertiliser every 2-3 months. Starfruit bears fruit on short stems along the branches and trunk (cauliflory-adjacent habit) and can produce multiple crops per year in tropical conditions. Fruit takes 60-75 days to mature after flowering. In WA, starfruit grows in the Kimberley and Pilbara and in frost-free coastal Perth gardens with warm microclimates. No significant quarantine restrictions apply to starfruit in WA. Fruit fly monitoring is advisable in all regions.
