Growing Pomelo in Western Australia

Pomelo is the largest of all citrus fruits, producing grapefruit-sized to football-sized fruit with thick, pithy skin and sweet, mildly tart flesh. It is the ancestor of the grapefruit and shares similar growing requirements but is generally more tolerant of tropical heat and humidity. In Australia, pomelo is mainly available as part of multi-graft fruit salad trees rather than as single-variety plants, combining it with other citrus on a single rootstock. Pomelo grows best in warm to hot climates: coastal Queensland, northern NSW, and the warm northern regions of WA including the Kimberley and Pilbara. It requires at least 2-3 years before fruiting and rewards patience with impressive, aromatic fruit. Plant in full sun in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Apply citrus fertiliser three times per year. Pomelo is more tolerant of humidity than grapefruit and less prone to rind problems. Fruit takes 6-8 months to mature after flowering and is typically harvested from May to August in most Australian regions. In WA, pomelo is subject to the same citrus biosecurity restrictions as other citrus species. All citrus plant material must be sourced from WA-accredited suppliers or come with appropriate certification. Citrus gall wasp is a concern in eastern states but has not yet established in WA.
