Growing Orange in Western Australia

Orange (Citrus sinensis) is Australia's most commercially important citrus. Home growers have access to a wide range of varieties from early to late season, making it possible to harvest oranges from May through to October in temperate climates. Oranges require full sun, well-drained soil, and regular feeding. They are frost-sensitive when young. Most trees are grafted onto rootstock suited to local conditions. Grafted trees fruit within 2-4 years. Regular deep watering during fruit development reduces fruit drop. Varieties available include Washington Navel (seedless, ideal for eating, peaks July-August), Valencia (juicing orange, late season), Blood Orange including Tarocco and Cara Cara types (distinctive flavour, cold-dependent colouring), and Cara Cara (pink-fleshed navel). Dwarf varieties are available for pot growing. Oranges are widely available from nurseries across Australia. Blood oranges are in higher demand than supply and can sell out quickly at nurseries.
