Growing Mango in Western Australia

Mango (Mangifera indica) is Australia's most popular tropical fruit tree. Commercial production is centred in tropical Queensland, the Northern Territory, and the Kimberley region of WA, but mangoes can be grown successfully in subtropical coastal areas and even sheltered spots in Perth and coastal NSW. Mangoes need a distinct dry season to trigger flowering. Trees prefer well-drained sandy loam soil and full sun, and are sensitive to frost when young. They are heavy feeders and benefit from fertilising twice a year. Grafted trees typically fruit within 3-5 years. Annual pruning after harvest keeps trees to a manageable size and improves air circulation. Varieties tracked on treestock include Kensington Pride (KP), Brooks, Keitt, Nam Doc Mai, R2E2, and several Thai varieties. Kensington Pride is the classic Australian supermarket mango. R2E2 produces large, low-fibre fruit. Nam Doc Mai is a popular Thai variety suited to warm subtropical climates. Mangoes are available from several nurseries, with stock most reliable in spring and summer (September to February). WA buyers should note that most QLD and NSW nurseries do not ship to WA due to quarantine restrictions. WA-based nurseries occasionally stock grafted mangoes.
