Growing Lime in Western Australia

Lime is an essential citrus for tropical and subtropical Australian gardens, with tahitian lime being the most widely grown. Unlike lemons, most limes prefer warmth and do not suit cold climates well. Tahitian lime (also called Persian lime) is the standard supermarket lime and the most reliable home garden choice. Tahitian lime produces large, seedless fruit year-round in warm climates. Kaffir lime (makrut lime) is grown for its aromatic leaves used in Southeast Asian cooking rather than its fruit. Australian finger lime is a native species producing small, caviar-like citrus. All prefer full sun and well-drained soil with regular fertilising. Varieties tracked include Tahitian Lime, Kaffir Lime (Makrut), Sweet Lime, and various dwarf forms. Finger lime (a native Australian species) is treated separately. Kaffir lime leaves are in high demand from home cooks. Tahitian lime is available from most nurseries year-round. Kaffir lime is less common and sells out quickly.
