Growing Jujube in Western Australia

Jujube is a drought-hardy deciduous tree from China that produces sweet, apple-flavoured fruit and is remarkably adaptable to Australian conditions. It handles heat, drought, poor soils, and moderate frosts far better than most fruit trees, making it a useful option for inland and semi-arid regions. Tracked varieties include Honey Jar (small, very sweet, honey-like flavour, one of the most popular for fresh eating), GA866 (large, elongated fruit, crisp and sweet), and Admiral Wilkes (a distinctive large variety). Jujube requires a warm, dry summer for best fruit development and some winter chill (about 300-500 hours) to break dormancy effectively. It performs best in western NSW, South Australia, WA's wheatbelt and inland zones, and the hot dry regions of Victoria. In humid subtropical climates, fruit quality is often reduced. Plant in full sun in any well-drained soil, including clay and alkaline types. Once established, jujube requires minimal supplemental watering. Fruit is eaten fresh in the crisp stage or dried when it shrinks to a wrinkled, date-like texture. Harvest typically runs from February to May in most Australian regions. Jujube is not subject to significant quarantine restrictions in WA and is an excellent choice for WA's drier inland regions.
