Growing Fig in New South Wales
Fig (Ficus carica) is one of the most reliable fruiting trees for southern Australian gardens. The common fig thrives in a Mediterranean climate: cool to cold winters and hot, dry summers. It suits Perth, Adelaide, coastal Victoria, inland NSW, and the ACT well. Figs will also grow in subtropical QLD but may fruit less reliably.
Figs are deciduous, losing their leaves in winter. This dormant period is when bare-root trees are planted and shipped. Trees are drought-tolerant once established and require minimal maintenance. They fruit on the previous year's wood, so avoid heavy winter pruning. Figs are self-fertile and do not require the fig wasp for the varieties sold in Australia.
Common varieties available include Brown Turkey (reliable, mid-season), Preston Prolific (large crops, good for WA), Black Genoa (rich, jam-suitable fruit), White Adriatic (sweet, fresh eating), and Osborn's Prolific. Heritage Fruit Trees (VIC) stocks a wide range of named heritage varieties.
Figs are widely available from Australian nurseries, with the best selection in late autumn and winter (the dormant bare-root season, roughly May to August).
